Plane creates scare at SML before landing safely
A plane that made an unauthorized takeoff and circled for several hours landed without incident in Roanoke yesterday. The "Roanoke Times" reports the pilot, 50-year-old Samuel Shields considered killing himself by crashing into Smith Mountain Lake and was seen near the Lake during the flight. Shields was met by federal authorities when he landed back at Roanoke Regional Airport shortly before 3 p.m.
