Local Former QB among drug arrests at Amherst Co. HS The former quarterback of Amherst County High School's state championship football teams is among six former and current Amherst County High School students who were arrested this morning for allegedly distributing marijuana and other drugs at school. Peter Rose has committed to play for Virginia Tech next year on a scholarship. Former Lancers' baseball player Jody Ramsey is also charged, while the other four are juveniles. The arrests are the result of a 10-month investigation by an undercover female sheriff's deputy who's been posing as a senior at the high school. The investigation started after complaints from students, parents and teachers about drug sales and distribution by students. Lynchburg man found dead in Pittsylvania Co. A Lynchburg man has been found dead in Pittsylvania County. The body of 23-year-old Derek Lamont Williams was found off of Rockford School Road in the Gretna area Wednesday night. As of last night, investigators had interviewed several persons of interest. Lynchburg police and the Pittsylvania County sheriff's office are investigating. Randolph College to build new track & field complex Randoph College breaks ground today on a more than five-million-dollar track and field facility. According to the "News & Advance", the project is being funded through a five-point-six-million-dollar bond from the Amherst County Industrial Development Authority. The new facility will be located next to the school's Physical Education and Recreation Building. It will feature an eight-lane, 400-meter track and synthetic turf field, as well as permanent seating, lighting, press box, concession, and restroom area. The project is slated for completion by late fall. Jerry Falwell remembered It has been one year now since the death of the Reverend Jerry Falwell. Thousands of people gathered a year ago today for an impromptu service after his death was announced. Today -- family members say they plan to visit his grave -- but there will be no formal ceremony. Falwell's office at the Carter Glass mansion at Liberty University remains the way he left it -- and tours of the mansion are also available. Two men charged with assault outside restaurant Two former Liberty University football players have been charged with assault following an incident in Lynchburg. WSET-TV reports Steven Ray Lloyd, Jr. and Tyler Tipton attacked a man outside the Buffalo Wild Wings last Friday night. Police continue to investigate the incident and have not released many details. The Lloyd family is planning on securing an attorney by the end of the week. Loudoun Co. mother brings guns to school Authorities in Loudoun County say a mother had three loaded pistols in her purse during a meeting with an administrator at Round Hill Elementary School. Sheriff's office spokesman Kraig Troxell says the 45-year-old woman has not been charged with a crime but has been committed to a hospital psychiatric unit. State Police to help in Amherst Co. murder investigation The Amherst county sheriff’s department has called in the state police to help investigate the murder of a teenager earlier this month. 21-year-old Timothy Wayne Wright Jr. is charged in the death of 19-year-old Justin Baumgardner, who was found shot to death in his pickup truck. An eyewitness who was allegedly with Wright at the time is the son of an Amherst County sheriff’s deputy. State Police investigate Altavista shooting State police are investigating a shooting last night in Altavista. According to the Altavista Police Department, officers responded to a "shots fired" call in the 1500 block of Main Street. When they arrived, they found a suspect, 57-year-old Michael Long of Hurt, with a shotgun. Police say the officers ordered Long several times to drop the weapon. According to a news release, Long "turned and pointed the shotgun in their direction at which time both officers fired striking the suspect." Long was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses say a 17-year old female was also injured. She was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave, their names have not been released. |
